5 Common ABS System Brake Repair Problems (And What to Do About Them)

1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensors

This is #1 culprit behind ABS warning lights throughout the commercial fleets. The wheel speed sensors are placed right next to the wheel hub, and continuously deliver wheel rotation data to the ABS control module. Positioned so close to the road, they fight dirt, water, heat and relentless vibration every single mile; and eventually, they lose that battle.

Signs: ABS light on, erratic braking behavior, unexpected traction control activation.

Fix: Sensor replacement is one of the more straightforward ABS brake system repair jobs, and one of the most cost-effective. If the sensor fails during routine maintenance, it is much cheaper to replace it, rather than replacing the entire system on the road.

2. ABS Control Module (ECU) Failure

The ABS control module is the brain of the whole operation. It takes in a signal from each wheel speed sensor, operates it in milliseconds and tells the hydraulic unit exactly what to do. If the module begins to fail, as can happen when the voltage spikes or moisture gets in, or simply when they age, the ABS system can go out of service.

Signs: ABS light comes on when the system is completely off, several fault codes are stored, no response when ABS is activated during scenarios.

Fix: Don’t let anyone guess on this one. Proper diagnostic scanning is essential to rule out wiring issues before scanning the module. 3. Hydraulic Pump or Valve Issues

4. Damaged Wiring or Corroded Connectors

Over time connectors corrode and wiring harnesses become damaged through exposure to salt, mud, moisture and constant vibration. Degrading wiring between ABS sensors and the control module will cause false fault codes, glitchy warning lights and unpredictable braking that leaves your driver scratching his head.

Signs: ABS warning light that flashes, some brakes don’t brake, and multiple unrelated fault codes occur at the same time.

Fix: Inspect the wiring harness in detail, including all connectors, grounds and all wiring runs back to the ECU. It is hard work, but there’s no shortcut. Skip it, and you’ll spend more time and money chasing symptoms that keep coming back.

5. Worn or Damaged Tone Rings (Reluctor Rings)

Tone rings are toothed metal rings attached to the wheel hub or axle shaft, the wheel speed sensor reads them the same way a barcode scanner reads a label. The sensor begins feeding garbage data to the ECU when you break a tooth off that ring (which happens more than you’d think on rough roads or during aggressive hub work), thus causing the ABS to stop working correctly or all together.

Signs: ABS activating during normal stops, uneven braking feel across axles, fault codes specific to one wheel position.

Fix: Tone ring replacement, usually performed alongside wheel bearing or hub service. It’s a repair that involves knowing what to look for, and is included in all comprehensive brake services, which is a visual inspection of the ring.
